The Love That Cannot Be Drowned

Have you ever noticed how many relationships run on hidden rules? We decide, often without realizing it, exactly what will hurt us, and then we spend our days watching for it. Scripture points us toward a different way to live, one where love itself removes the need for all that watching. John called it perfect love, and it is worth exploring what that actually means.

Love With a Goal in Sight

First John 4:18 tells us that full grown love turns fear out of doors and expels every trace of terror, because fear carries the weight of punishment with it. The word translated perfect, teleios, describes something aimed at a goal. So perfect love is not flawless performance. It is love that knows exactly where it is headed. When our affection has direction, fear loses its grip, because fear thrives in uncertainty. A heart anchored to a clear purpose in God does not scatter its energy worrying about being wounded.

Trading Conditions for Confidence

So much of our hurt comes from conditions we quietly attach to love. We decide that if someone fails to call, show up, or notice us, we are entitled to feel wounded. Proverbs 29:25 warns that the fear of man brings a snare, while whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe and set on high. Trusting God, rather than managing everyone else’s behavior, is what frees us from that snare. When we release the fine print we have written for how others must treat us, we gain the confidence to approach people, forgive quickly, and love without constantly bracing for impact.

An Unquenchable Fire

Song of Solomon 8:7 reminds us that many waters cannot quench love, nor can floods drown it. True love behaves like fire that water cannot put out. It does not need protecting from every disappointment, because it was never meant to be managed by conditions in the first place. When we let God’s love burn in us without limits, we become steady in a way the world cannot shake.

Perfect love, then, is not the absence of imperfection. It is love with its eyes fixed on God, free of the fine print that keeps us guarded. As you walk this week, consider where you have quietly placed conditions on love, and ask the Lord to help you burn brighter than the fear that tries to put you out.
